A series of garments and jewelry commissioned by the non-profit design research practice common-interest as part of the installation A Black Mountain Closet for the exhibition Revisiting Black Mountain at Museum für Gestaltung Zurich (CH) from 30.04.–03.06.2018. A Black Mountain Closet is an applied design history investigation into Black Mountain College’s dress culture. Curated and based on an essay by common-interest entitled “Stripping down and dressing up”, the installation investigates the cultural history of the Black Mountain College through the embodied experience of selected items of dress. As part of the installation in the central courtyard of the Museum für Gestaltung a selection of sandals, shift dresses, outdoor working clothes, shirts, jeans and simple jewelry are recreated and re-envisioned. True to the spirit the Black Mountain College the garments and accessories are made of simple materials responding to a functional need while cheap and found materials are elevate by the means of repurposing. A Black Mountain Closet is neither a historical celebration nor a nostalgic reanimation of the Black Mountain College, but instead a contemporary creation that seeks to carry further a selection of ideas and principles of the college. > Enquire, Share, Next Project Curated by common-interest, Creative Direction and Design Nadine Goepfert
