Dress Information Group
Description
D.I.G — Dress Information Group was a collaborative project initiated
by professor Joke Robaard at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
In this project we took a closer look at garments and accessories concerning clothing habits
and tried to define what exactly changed in peoples behavior and dress code within the last years.
My research for the D.I.G. focuses on the closure of garments, more specifically on the closure
of tops. Referring to Roland Barthes’ “The Fashionsystem” the research examines the basic structure
of a divided garment, it’s closure with it’s attachments and it’s mobility.
While investigating images of magazines and observing peoples` gesture and hand-movement
when handling buttons and zippers, the research considers a possible change in attitude and behavior
of individuals wearing divided garments.
As a result the research attempts to ascertain a potential symbolism of open and closed
garments and wants to reveal a change of unapparent / unconscious trends.
As part of the exhibition GET REAL / REAL SELF by Joke Robaard and Giene Steenman the groupproject D.I.G of the TxT Department was shown at the AMBER Arnhem Modebiennale.
